Our History

The idea for Growing Well began in 2002 when James and Beren our current Growing Co-ordinator and Manager recognised that there were not structured and supportive opportunities for people recovering from mental health problems in South Cumbria to work on a farm.

Inspired by the work of the Camphill Trust they began to envision a farm business that would involve people to support their recovery.  Around this time the farm partners of Low Sizergh Farm were looking for someone to come to the farm to grow vegetables that could then be sold in the Low Sizergh Barn farmshop.  They advertised this opportunity in the local press and Beren responded to them with the idea for Growing Well.

Beren was employed at that time with a rural social enterprise development project hosted by ACT (Action for Communities in Cumbria) who provided Beren with time over the following eighteen months to develop the idea, to recruit a board of founding directors and to raise the financial support that was required to start up.

Growing Well began trading in October of 2004.
