"Keep up with what we are thinking..."
11 June 2013
We have been participating in the Open Farm Sunday event, in partnership with Low Sizergh Farm, for the past couple of years but this year with our new gravel path to our site and the sun shining visitors streamed into Growing Well, taking in our extended polytunnels and newly erected yurts. The lure of free children's activities always attracts families and this year we welcomed Matt from Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre from Penrith who kindly brought along, spiny toads, an African Pygmy hedgehog, two birds of prey and some ducklings but the most popular animal was the friendly ferret who was more than happy to let the children play with him. It was lovely to see so many people and thank you to everyone for paying us a visit.

Growing Well opens it's doors to the public as part of the national event, Open Farm Sunday 2013. In partnership with Low Sizergh Barn there will be a variety of activities and talks for adults and children so please pop in and say hello. James will be chatting about what is happening on the field and in our polytunnels, Hazel will be making up edible hanging baskets and I will be running children's activities.

Its sunny today at Growing Well, and after a month of building works we are beginning to use our new and exciting facilities. Our new yurts are finished and we all sat outside in the sunshine eating lunch for the first time on our new terrace looking down over our new office space and a picnic area waiting to be landscaped.
The sun during April has gradually warmed the soil and today is also the first day for outdoor planting. The level two students got busy planting broad beans in an area of the field that four weeks ago had new field drains installed. No soggy plants at Growing Well in 2013!

"Highly Productive - an 'un-pretty' but pretty inspiring organic farm, near Kendal - a community venture where confidence as well as varied produce is cultivated" writes Tim Longville.
A lovely article about Growing Well is written in this month's (November) issue of Cumbria Life. Tim visited us a while ago and together with some beautiful pictures taken on a lovely sunny day by Val Corbett they capture the essence of life at Growing Well. At the end of the article James shares his successes - and challenges - with different organic seeds he has used over the last couple of years.

We were delighted to get this picture from one of our Crop Shareholders who found the vegetables themselves are smiling! Thanks Matthew, who said:
"It seems that Growing well does bring joy to many, including the vegetables that are grown. I found this smily face in the core of a pepper I recently chopped up. The pepper was also delicious!"
