March has been an incredibly busy month. We started with an Open Afternoon where a steady stream of visitors entered our gates for the first time this year. Working alongside the South Lakes Orchard Group, Hilary Wilson gave two short talks and demonstrations on apple grafting during the afternoon. Hazel gave a demonstration on taking cuttings from root stock whilst James talked about our plans for the site for 2011.
It was swiftly followed by our education programme getting underway, whilst our site was transformed by our volunteers, with polytunnels being taken down and new ones erected. We began to get underway with the new land that we are taking on this year, preparing beds for 300 fruit bushes. Pauline and Hazel also hosted two professional development days for teachers from around the North of England.
In amongst all this the team has been seed-sowing for the new season, our joiner has been installing a new kitchen, we've got new walls on our training yurt and contractors have been in laying the hedges on site and ploughing the fields for the new season!
There's always something to do at Growing Well!
